American Donut Recipe: A Sweet Indulgence

The history of the donut is as rich and interesting as the treat itself. Though donuts are widely popular in America today, their origins go back much further and involve several cultures. The history of donuts is generally traced back to 17th and 18th century New York, where they were made by Dutch immigrants from New Netherland, who created fried dough balls called “olykoeks,” which means “oily cakes.” These were similar to modern donuts, although they did not yet have the iconic ring shape. Donuts are commonly associated with reality and metaphorical representations, breakfast, bakeries and baked goods, snacks, coffee breaks, “The Simpsons,” and the negative stereotypes of police officers.

When I went to America, I tried this (donut) for the first time. I learned this recipe from my sister who lives in America. Today, I will share it with all of you.

Essential Ingredients for Donuts:

  • Flour: 3 cups
  • Milk: 1 cup (warm)
  • Sugar: 1/4 cup
  • Egg: 1
  • Yeast: 1 tablespoon
  • Salt: to taste
  • Butter: 3 tablespoons
  • Water: as needed
  • Oil (for frying)

Preparation Method for Donuts:

 
  • In a bowl, take one cup of warm milk and add yeast. Cover it and let it sit for ten minutes.
  • After ten minutes, when the yeast has bubbled up, mix in sugar, egg, and salt well.
  • Then add the flour and knead it well, using a little water if needed. The dough should be slightly soft.
  • Now, add two tablespoons of butter into the dough and knead again.
  • Once well-kneaded, coat the dough with one tablespoon of butter and place it in a large bowl, covered with a cotton cloth. Let it rest in a warm place for 2 hours.
  • After 2 hours, when the dough has doubled in size, press it down to release the air and knead it again.
  • Dust a surface with a little flour and roll out the dough with a rolling pin. Use a donut cutter to cut out donut shapes.
  • Arrange the donuts on a large tray and cover them with a cotton cloth for 20 minutes.
  • Now, heat oil in a pan and gently fry the donuts, flipping them occasionally.
  • Once fried, remove the donuts from the heat and let them cool.

Chocolate Ganache Ingredients for Donuts:

  • Dark chocolate chips: 100 grams
  • Butter: 1 teaspoon
  • Whipped cream: 50 grams

Preparation Method for Chocolate Ganache:

  • Place all the ingredients in a double boiler and mix well until the chocolate is completely melted.
  • Ensure the chocolate does not get too hot.
  • Now, let the chocolate ganache cool slightly. Dip the donuts into the ganache and sprinkle colorful sprinkles on top, and your chocolate donuts are ready!
